Black Sex-Link

This is a Black Sex-Link hen. Black Sex-Links are "sex-linked" which means that the females are a different color than the males when they are chicks. That makes it easy to distinguish between the females and the males when they are chicks. Black Sex-Links are crossbred. Black Sex-Link hens lay brown eggs. You can tell if a hen lays brown eggs, white eggs or green eggs by looking at her earlobe. If a hen has a red earlobe she will lay brown eggs.

 

 

 

 

Ancona

This is an Ancona hen. Anconas were originally from Italy. Ancona is the name of a city in Italy. These chickens are in the Mediterranean Class. Standard-bred chickens are grouped into classes. The classes that standard-bred chickens are grouped into include: Mediterranean, European, English, Asiatic and American. The word standard-bred means that chickens are not cross-bred. Anconas lay white eggs. Anconas are raised primarly for egg production. Hens that lay white eggs have white earlobes. Most chickens in the Mediterranean Class lay white eggs.

 

 

 

 

White Leghorn

This is a White Leghorn hen. Leghorns were originally from Italy. Livorno (Leghorn) is the name of a city in Italy. Leghorns are in the Mediterranean Class. Leghorns lay white eggs. Leghorns are raised primarly for egg production. Leghorns are the breed that most of the commercial egg farms in the United States use. Leghorns are excellent layers of white eggs. Most chickens in the Mediterranean Class lay white eggs.

 

 

 

 

Buff Columbian Rock

This is a Buff Columbian Rock bantam hen. Bantams are smaller than large fowl. Bantams do not lay as many eggs as large fowl. Buff Columbian Rock bantams lay brown eggs. Bantams are not used for commercial egg production because they lay so few eggs. This Buff Columbian Rock's name is Ginger. She is named after one of the hens in the movie "Chicken Run".

 

 

 

 

Buff Columbian Rock Cock

This is a Buff Columbian Rock bantam cock. Bantams are smaller than large fowl. This Buff Columbian Rock cock's name is Aleksei. I have shown him at the Polk County Fair in Oregon. He has won some ribbons (awards). Ginger and Aleksei are the same breed of chicken.

 

 

 

 

Barred Plymouth Rock

This is a Barred Plymouth Rock pullet. A pullet is a female chicken who is under a year old. Barred Plymouth Rock hens lay brown eggs. Barred Plymouth Rocks are in the American Class. Barred Plymouth Rocks are a dual-purpose bird which means they can be raised for eggs or meat. Barred Plymouth Rocks have a single comb.

This is a Red Star hen. Red Stars are a cross between a Leghorn, a Rhode Island Red and a New Hampshire. Red Stars are a sex-linked breed. That makes it easy to distinguish between the females and the males when they are chicks. The hen is red with white tail feathers. The cock is all white. Red Stars are excellent layers of brown eggs! This is a Golden Sebright hen. Golden Sebrights are bantams. Golden Sebrights lay a few brown eggs per year. They have rose combs. This hen's name is Svetlana.

 

 

 

 

Americauna

This is an Americauna hen. Americaunas belong to the American Class. Americaunas lay green or bluish shelled eggs!!! If an Americauna is crossed with another breed of chicken, the offspring of that cross will lay green tinted eggs. The Americauna was developed from the Araucana (a South American breed). The Americauna has a cushion comb.
